Interior painting in Alta Vista and Gloucester

The south-east of Ottawa is mostly built from the 1960s to the 1990s: bungalows and back-splits in Alta Vista, row houses and condo townhouses through Gloucester. Many of these homes have been repainted several times.

Three ward areas, three kinds of home

From the 2021 census:

• Alta Vista ward area: about 30% of homes built before 1960 and 46% from 1961 to 1980. About 44% single-detached and 35% apartments in buildings of five or more storeys. About 51% owner-occupied.
• Gloucester-Southgate ward area (Blossom Park, Greenboro, Hunt Club Park): about 30% built 1961–1980 and 30% in 1981–1990. About 42% row houses and about 27% condos.
• Beacon Hill-Cyrville ward area: about 59% built 1961–1980, 37% row houses, and about 36% condos, the highest condo share of the areas we've profiled.

Prep by era

Before 1960 (about three in ten Alta Vista homes). Health Canada says these homes probably contain lead paint. Homes built before 1960 get a lead paint check before any sanding.

1960s to 1980s. Health Canada says these homes may have lead paint outside and smaller amounts inside, and that it shouldn't be sanded or heat-gunned. Tell us your build year. Expect glossy old coats under newer paint; scuff-sanding is included.

Row houses and condo townhouses. Narrow halls and stairways take the most knocks. Filling up to about a dozen small holes per room is included, and anything more is a flat minor-prep line you see before sending.

Colour and rooms

Bungalow living rooms are often one large room (lived-in $1,270). Back-split half-levels work best described room by room. Walls-only prices include four stock whites. Three rooms in one order: three small lived-in rooms start at $2,125 before HST (the first at $795, then two at $665), and larger rooms follow the same first-room, next-room pattern.
