Chapter two: making builder white feel like yours

You've unpacked, the kids have claimed their rooms and the white walls are starting to feel like a rental. About 36% of Barrhaven homes are row houses, and many have one open kitchen, dining and living space.

• Start with the heart of the house. The open main floor prices as large. Pick one main colour and, if you want a little drama, add an $80 accent wall.
• Then the bedrooms. Do the primary bedroom first and the kids' rooms after. Each furnished room after the first in the same order costs $130 less.
• Look up before you add the ceiling. Ceilings in newer homes often hold up. If yours has marks, the stain treatment line is $119 / $145 / $180.
• Love white? Keep it. Walls-only prices include four stock whites. Adding the ceiling opens the full curated palette, and premium paint ($85 a room) opens any colour.

Why your house is an easy one to paint

Barrhaven is young. About 48% of its homes were built from 2006 to 2021, and only about 1% predate 1960. In the Barrhaven West ward area (Half Moon Bay, Stonebridge, Jockvale, Strandherd), about 40% went up from 2011 to 2021. Most walls are on their first or second coat, with no layers of old finishes to fight.

In the Barrhaven East ward area (Longfields, Davidson Heights, Chapman Mills, Knollsbrook), more homes date from the 1980s to the 2000s. Those walls are more likely on their second or third colour, and that's fine too.
